Photography has evolved so much in the past few years that it only seems right that education should follow the same footsteps of advancing techniques and technologies in the field of photography.  That is precisely what a couple of London colleges thought when they introduced a class called iPhoneography.  Apparently it will be a course offered in March at London’s Kensington and Chelsea Colleges, which “will be dedicated to showing students how they can create better images with their mobile devices,” tells Charlie Osborn of ZDNet.  In terms of creative photography classes, this is the first creatively thinking, or out-of-the-box, idea for a class that schools in London have come up with, as well as being the first I have ever heard of.

In terms of teaching how to take better photos with mobile devices, the course will not only address the basic rules of photography including that of composition, color, and light, but it is also prepared to teach people how to use the wide range of photography applications that are currently offered in the Apple App Store.  Of course, with the practicality of teaching such a class, there most certainly will be exercises, projects, and homework to ensure that students realize that it is not a course you can just blow-off or breeze right through.

This is a wonderful course to include in the creative photography curriculum.  As an introductory level photography class, this course offers a new way for people to be introduced to the art of photography, and proves that you don’t always need expensive equipment to be an artistic photographer.  Even a device such as an iPhone is a great starting point in experimenting with the medium of photography.  I predict it won’t be long before we see similar courses popping-up in American schools all around the nation.  I know I would have loved to have taken a course like this back when I went to college, despite the fact that I have never owned an iPhone.  This is actually a good point to bring up.  Why should these types of classes be limited to the iPhone?  I think it should be equally fair that if a school offers a photography class using the iPhone, why not offer a photography class dedicated to Android phones?  This seems like a logical idea to me.  Well, I’m sure time will tell, and I wonder what other types of photography courses we may see in the near future.
